The view from the end of September

The Saugeen Shores Refugee Fund had a successful weekend fundraising at Your Independent Grocer in Port Elgin. We raised $1100 over two days, thanks to diligent volunteers who ran the table, handed out info cards, and explained to many people what we’re doing.

A presentation at Tolmie Memorial Presbyterian Church also resulted in $500 of donations, which is a wonderful addition to the fund.

We’re currently just over 1/4 of the way there, which is fabulous… but let’s not lose the momentum! We’re on a roll here, and need to keep working toward the 20K goal.

THIS WEEKEND (October 3-4) we will be fundraising at Port Elgin’s famous Pumpkinfest, at a table set up in front of the Chamber of Commerce, so please stop by to see us there. We’re still looking for someone to help cover the Saturday afternoon shift, 1-3 pm, so let us know if you can help.

OUR NEXT MEETING is scheduled for Tuesday, October 13 at 8 p.m. at the Resource Room of the United Church in Port Elgin. Hope to see you there!

Fundraising Event Tomorrow!

The Saugeen Shores Refugee Fund will make its first public fundraising debut tomorrow at Your Independent Grocer in Port Elgin. Please stop by to learn more about what we’re doing, pick up an info card, and make a donation to this very important cause.

We will be there for most of the weekend!

If you want to help out, we still need volunteers to help run the table in the afternoon between 12 and 5 p.m. Any combination of hours is fine. Please message via Facebook or email saugeen.refugeefund@gmail.com if you wish to get involved.

Hope to see you there!

WHO ARE WE?

The Saugeen Shores Refugee Fund was launched in September 2015 by a group of residents of Port Elgin and Southampton, ON.

We are deeply concerned about the ongoing Syrian refugee crisis and have decided to take action by raising funds to sponsor a family to come to our community. Once we have raised the money, we could have a family here within 1 to 6 months.

The process is being facilitated by Mennonite Central Committee, a non-governmental organization with a long and well-respected history of refugee resettlement in North America.

If you have any questions or wish to get involved, please contact us at saugeen.refugeefund@gmail.com.
